Objectives of Power System Protection

The objective of power system protection is to isolate a faulty section of electrical power system from rest of the live system so that the rest portion can function satisfactorily without any severe damage due to fault current.
The device which isolate the faulty part of the power system from the rest of the healthy part of the power system is known as Fuse or Circuit Breaker.
The Fuse or Circuit Breaker automatically open the circuit by blowing the Fuse or isolating the contacts during fault condition. For the Circuit Breaker, trip signal comes from protection relay(s) during a fault condition.
